September 23Pillars of the Earth (1990) by Ken Follett, 983 pp.
RSVP hostess Linda Stansfield. Facilitator is TBA..
You probably won't be taking this hefty novel to the beach, but you definitely will want to start reading Follett's book this summer in anticipation of the lively group discussion it will invoke this fall.

This historical novel, set in the 12th century, about the building of a cathedral in the fictional English town of Knightsbridge, is a departure from the author's usually fare of international suspense and intrigue. This is not to say there are not ample good guys and bad guys: a new young prior and a poor builder seeking to fulfill his dream of erecting his very own cathedral pitted against an opposing bishop, an earl and others. You may want a small legal pad at hand to keep track of the characters and, for fun, make note of the sometimes incongruent language and customs that no plodding 12th century citizen could have envisioned.

October 28Interpreter of Maladies (1999) by Jhumpa Lahiri, 212 pp.
RSVP hostess Gail Richman; Facilitator, Kathy Pizar

When you need a break from Follett's cathedral building, pick up this 2000 Pulizer winner, a group of nine short stories. Lahiri depicts the conflicts South Asian Americans encounter in American society, where even if native born, they may feel the outsider incapable of assimilation. Reviewers described London-born Lahiri's writing as elegant, honed by a BA from Barnard College, MAs in English, Creative Writing, and Comparative Lit. and Art, Boston University
; and a doctorate in Renaissance Studies, also from Boston U. Enter the worlds of Shoha and Shukumar, Mr. Pirzach, Mr. and Mrs. Das and family, Boon Ma and the others, each story another cast and setting. Yet, might there be a thread of continuity running through their experiences?

New York Theater GroupTravel to NYC on a chartered bus to see a Broadway play, usually for a Wednesday matinee. The excursions begin around 8:30 a.m. They include a morning visit to a museum or other place of interest, followed by lunch near the theater (either separately or as part of the group), and a brisk walk to the theater. Prices include theater ticket, round-trip bus fare, and refreshments served on the return trip. Waiting list for some performances. Contact Bonnie Cytron immediately to reserve your seat.

Sept. 24, 2008All My SonsArthur Miller's first successful play, which premiered in 1947, returns to Broadway. Inspired by a true story, the plot revolves around a businessman who knowingly sold the government defective airplane parts during WWII, resulting in tragedy. Starring Katie Holmes, John Lithgow, Patrick Holmes and Dianne West.

March 18, 2009Billy Elliot, Elton John's glorious London hit about a youth destined for Newcastle coal mines who longs to join the Royal Ballet School. Cost: $134.

From billyelliotbroadway.com: "Billy's life is packed with culture of County Durham in nothern England during the mid-1980s. The musical brings every detail to vivid life, from the bawdy lingo to the life-shattering Miners' strike. The rough, gruff, working-class world starkly contrasts with Billy's peaceful ballet class." Click the link, Billy Elliot, to get a taste of the show.

For the summer, rent Cat, Billy Elliot and South Pacific (1958) and read Michener's Pulitzer shocker, Tales of the South Pacific. Enjoy!
